How It All Works

Once correctly installed, the E-way® system takes complete care of tolling for you. All you need to do is listen. A tag (about the size of a pack of cards) is mounted on the inside of your windscreen. This needs to be done correctly - click here for more info When you drive through the toll plaza a stationary reader detects the tag and both devices authenticate each other.

The tag then releases its number and the reader transfers the data (location, time, vehicle classification) to a computer that checks whether the tag is valid, the account has sufficient funds and the vehicle classification is correct.

Depending on what the computer finds,
it instructs the tag to emit various beeps:
One long beep Transaction Successful.
One long beep then two short beeps Transaction Successful but account balance is low.
Four short beeps Transaction declined. Telephone 1300 555 833 immediately (Monday to Friday) or click here.
No beep Faulty Tag. Telephone 1300 555 833 immediately (Monday to Friday) or click here.

To avoid hassles and paperwork down the track, it is important that motorists take the following steps to assist an accurate tag reading at the M5 toll plaza:
  1. Stay in your lane as you pass through the toll plaza.
  2. Do not cross the unbroken white line.
These tips are important to make driving through the plaza smoother for you and safer for everyone.
